David McKenna has been a professor in the Film Division of Columbia University’s School of the Arts since the early 1990s. For the past ten years, he has been grooming student screenwriters at both Columbia and Barnard College. Other teaching assignments and guest artist positions include NYU, the New York Film Academy, Yale University, the American Academy of Dramatic Art and the Franco-American ESRA film program.

Trained as a theatre director at the University of Texas and Carnegie-Mellon University, he has staged over 100 plays on Broadway, off-off-Broadway and in regional and university theatres.

He has served as a script analyst and story consultant for private clients and film studios for 25 years. During that time, he has written coverage and development notes for 20th Century Fox, Home Box Office, Focus Features and United Artists. His private clients have included Cy Coleman, AE Hotchner, screenwriters Charlie Peters, Dan Harris, Mark Fergus and Lavinia Currier and multiple Emmy Award winner Susan Dansby.

He has written radio scripts for Mel Gibson and Rabbit Ears Radio. Since 2002, he has teamed with writer-director Mark Harris to create Desperate Comfort, a film company which produces short narratives for the Internet.

He is a highly regarded commentator on film and has lately been recruited by groups such as the Alliance Francaise, the National Arts Club, the National Board of Review and the Glimmerglass Opera company to speak on film history.
